Crusader Kings 3 Console Commands: The Working List

The Crusader Kings 3 console is locked behind a launch option, and the launch option costs you achievements for as long as it is set. That is the trade. What you get for it is the full Paradox toolbox: gold, prestige, piety, age, traits, culture, claims, and an effect command that runs script directly.

Takeaways Crusader Kings 3 console: the four things to know

  1. It needs -debug_mode Set it in the Steam launch options. Without it the console key does nothing.
  2. Debug mode switches off achievements and Ironman Remove the option, disable mods and verify the checksum to get them back.
  3. Most commands default to you gold, age and add_trait act on your ruler unless you add a character ID. Hover a portrait in debug mode to see the ID.
  4. The trainer has an Enable debug console switch One of its 25 cheats opens the console in a running game, no launch option involved.

The launch option is the price, and it is paid in achievements

Open Crusader Kings 3 through Steam, right-click it, Properties, and put -debug_mode in the launch options. Game Pass players start it from a command line instead. From then on the key left of 1 opens the console in any game. Skip the option and the same key does nothing at all, which is the most common reason the console “does not work”.

Debug mode disables achievements and Ironman while it is on. Paradox is clear about how to get them back on the Console commands page of the CK3 wiki, which is also the source for the syntax below: remove the option, disable every mod, and confirm the checksum on the main menu. The commands were verified there for patch 1.19, the Scribe update of 20 April 2026.

The commands

Most commands act on your own ruler unless you add a character ID at the end. In debug mode, hovering a portrait shows the ID.

CommandWhat it does
gold [amount]Adds gold, default 1,000
add_prestige [amount]Adds prestige, default 1,000

kill [id]Kills a character
know_schemes / end_schemesReveals or cancels schemes against you
add_stress [amount] [id]Adds stress, set_stress sets it
effect [script]Runs script directly

The last row is the important one. Anything without a command of its own, changing government being the usual example, goes through effect: effect change_government = feudal_government. It is the same scripting language the game’s own events use, which means it can do almost anything, and also that a typo does nothing, silently.

Where the console stops

Two places. The first is the launch option itself: every command on this page is unavailable in a game you started without it, and adding it later means giving up Ironman for that save.

The second is that commands are lumps. gold adds a thousand once, age moves a character once. Nothing holds a value, nothing subtracts on its own, and nothing acts on the character you are looking at without you finding its ID first. For a game measured in decades, where the problem is usually a nine-year-old heir with the wrong education, that is a lot of typing.

What the trainer does differently

The Crusader Kings 3 trainer has 25 cheats, six of them free, and one of them is Enable debug console. It opens the game’s own console in a running game without the launch option, which turns the whole list above into something you can reach for mid-campaign.

The other 24 are switches for the numbers that the game keeps in four currencies that do not convert. Gold, prestige, piety and renown each get an add and a reset, nine cheats in all, and three of the free six are gold. The six lifestyle skills get a plus ten each. Splendor, the newer dynasty resource, has an add and a reset.

Then there is age. Age plus five, age minus five and set age to zero are all free, which is a very Crusader Kings set of cheats. The console’s age command does the same thing, but with a number and an ID, and only after you have set the launch option.

Script or switches

The console if you want script. effect reaches things no trainer will ever have a switch for, and the launch option is a one-time setting.

The trainer if you want the four currencies and the ruler’s age without leaving Ironman for a debug session. Its own debug console switch means you do not have to choose.

Single-player only, as with every Paradox game. Multiplayer checks the checksum.

How do you open the console in Crusader Kings 3?

Start the game with -debug_mode in the launch options, then press the key left of 1 in game, shown as ` or ~ on a US keyboard, § or ^ on others. Without the launch option the key is dead.

Do Crusader Kings 3 console commands disable achievements?

Debug mode does, along with Ironman. To get achievements back, remove the launch option, disable all mods and check that the main menu shows the correct checksum.

What is the Crusader Kings 3 gold cheat?

gold followed by an amount, for example gold 5000. On its own, gold adds 1,000. add_prestige, add_piety and dynasty_prestige work the same way for the other three currencies.

Is there a console command to change government?

Not as a plain command. It runs through the effect command, for example effect change_government = feudal_government, and it needs the relevant DLC for governments that come from one.
