Stardew Valley Cheats and Codes on PC
Stardew Valley has no cheat menu, but on PC there are two real ways in. Item IDs in square brackets in your name still spawn items, and SMAPI's bundled console runs debug commands for money, items, time and friendship. Neither one costs you Steam achievements if you start the game the right way.
Takeaways Three ways to cheat in Stardew Valley on PC
- no install Name codes Item IDs in brackets in your name, e.g. [645]. You get the item whenever an NPC says your name.
- debug commands SMAPI console debug money, debug item, debug friendship. Exact values, and a real risk to the save.
- 17 cheats, 3 free Trainer Stamina, money, freeze time, easy fishing. Switched on and off while you play.
Typing /money in the chat gets you a joke, not gold
Stardew Valley 1.6.15 has no cheat menu, and the chat makes fun of anyone who looks for one. Open it, type /money, /cheat or /freegold, and the answer is a line from ConcernedApe telling you nice try. The Secrets page of the Stardew Valley wiki lists those replies along with a few other jokes the chat knows, such as /qi and /ape.
That is the whole built-in cheat system. There is no code screen and no console in the base game. What remains on PC are two routes from the edges of the game: a naming trick the developer never removed on PC, and a mod loader that brings its own console. Both work in 1.6.15, which is still the current PC release according to the wiki’s version history, released on 20 December 2024.
Item codes in your name still work on PC
The trick is old and still on the Secrets page. Put an item’s internal ID in square brackets into your character’s name, and you receive that item whenever an NPC says your name. The wiki’s example is [645][499][(O)163]: an Iridium Sprinkler, Ancient Seeds and the legendary fish Legend. Qualified IDs like (O)163 also reach furniture and weapons.
The wiki adds that the same works with the names of children and animals. Somewhere out there is a chicken called [645].
Two limits. The wiki marks it as PC and mobile only; version 1.3 removed it from the console editions. And since 1.5 the game notices. Mr. Qi says he is disappointed you are not playing fair and square, the Shrine of Illusions makes similar remarks when you change your name there, and nothing else happens. The item still arrives.
SMAPI: the console the game left out
SMAPI is the community mod loader, and it ships with a bundled mod called Console Commands. The player guide in the wiki links a separate installation guide for Windows, with steps for Steam, GOG and the Xbox app; on the Xbox app the game sits in C:\XboxGames\Stardew Valley. Start the game through SMAPI and a second window opens next to it. Every debug command goes there and starts with debug. Syntax below is from the wiki page on console commands:
| Command | What it does |
|---|---|
debug money 50000 | Sets your money to 50,000, it does not add |
debug item 74 5 | Five of item 74; quality is an optional third value |
debug fin "galaxy sword" | Finds an item by name, no ID needed |
debug energize | Refills energy to maximum |
debug time 2040 | Sets the clock to 8:40pm |
debug warp forest 33 99 | Teleports you to a spot in Cindersap Forest |
debug experience 0 15000 | Adds 15,000 farming XP |
debug friendship Abigail 2500 | Sets her to ten hearts |
Skill IDs for experience run from 0 to 5: farming, fishing, foraging, mining, combat, luck. Watch out for debug levelup. It shows the level-up window and changes nothing else.
On achievements the same player guide is clear: Steam achievements work fine as long as you launch SMAPI through Steam.
Where the free routes get clumsy
The wiki itself warns that debug commands are meant for developers, may crash the game and can permanently change or break a save. money sets instead of adding, so a typo with one zero too few takes money away. Name codes need an NPC to say your name, which turns a simple wish into a day of walking around Pelican Town.
And neither route does anything continuous. debug energize fills your energy once, and the next swing of the hoe starts draining it again. Nothing in the table above stops the clock.
What the trainer adds
The Stardew Valley trainer has 17 cheats. Three are free: heal, refill stamina and fast walkspeed. The other 14 cover what the console does in single shots and turn it into a state: unlimited stamina, an infinite watering can, freeze time and 3x faster time, easy fishing.
Item under mouse +5 and +50 work on whatever stack your cursor rests on, which is the trainer’s version of the bracket trick without the waiting. Add money and no money handle gold in both directions. Four switches are for the mines: godmode, super weapon damage, super weapon speed and always critical hit.
Pick by what you want
All three are for your own farm. For what cheats do to achievements in other games, see do cheats disable achievements.
- One rare item, no installs: the name codes, and a walk through town.
- Exact values, once: SMAPI and
debug moneyordebug friendship, after a backup of the save folder. - A whole season without the energy bar: the trainer, with unlimited stamina and freeze time switched on for as long as you want them.
