Best Single-Player PC Games, by Mood

Single-player is the half of PC gaming nobody has to schedule. No lobby, no friends online, no season pass clock. The best of it splits into four kinds of evening: a story you follow, a world you build, a system you master, a fight you win. Here is a shortlist of each from the games we cover, chosen for being good alone, with an honest note on where each one asks you to grind.

A story you follow

These are the games that end, which is a virtue: forty to a hundred hours with a shape.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is the conversation game. A d20 decides whether the talk you prepared for goes your way, and the party disapproves of you in real time. Cyberpunk 2077 is Night City after patch 2.0, with a character sheet that finally lets you respec, once. Red Dead Redemption 2 is the slowest and the most complete, a whole life with a horse in it. Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is Bohemia without a health bar, only conditions: hungry, tired, hurt. The Witcher 3 is still the monster-contract game the others get compared to. The story list goes deeper here.

Where they grind: the open-world ones. Cyberpunk’s eddies solve themselves once you find a crafting loop and cost you evenings until then. Red Dead’s money arrives in five-dollar increments.

A world you build

Satisfactory starts with one smelter. Anno 1800 is the industrial century as a supply chain, with influence as the quiet cap on everything. Anno 117: Pax Romana is the same idea in Roman dress, released in November 2025. Manor Lords is a village with two currencies and no console. Stardew Valley is a farm, a town and a calendar. Cities: Skylines II is a city that grows when the budget allows it.

Where they grind: the chain. One good in one chain runs short, and the fix is twenty minutes of building and waiting while the next population tier ticks.

A system you master

Crusader Kings 3 is a dynasty simulator where your heir has the wrong education. Hearts of Iron 4 is the war as political power, manpower and factories. Stellaris runs three research queues at once. RimWorld is a colony that fails slowly. Football Manager 2024 is a spreadsheet you feel things about. Total War: WARHAMMER 3 is the campaign map plus battles, and the battles are where a console cannot reach.

Where they grind: turns. Buildings that finish in six, research in nine, an army eleven turns from where it is needed. The trainers for this group are mostly about the waiting.

A fight you win

ELDEN RING is the fight that made the genre mainstream, with runes you lose where you died. Hades is the fight in twenty-minute pieces. Hollow Knight: Silksong is the fight with silk as the resource, earned by landing hits. SILENT HILL f is the fight you are not supposed to be good at, by design. Dead Island 2 is the fight in a Los Angeles cul-de-sac.

Where they grind: the currency you lose on death, and the boss that does not move.

Something you can do alone in a co-op game

PEAK, Supermarket Together and R.E.P.O. are built for a group and playable by one. Alone, they are single-player games with a slightly lonely soundtrack, and everything on this site applies to them exactly as long as nobody else joins. The guide on anti-cheat draws that line.

Where to go from here

The Steam store’s single-player tag is the widest list there is. The hundred games we cover are the narrower one, and each has a page on where it slows down and which cheats exist for that. If you already know what you want to play and only want the right time slot, the list sorted by time is the other way in.

What are the best single-player PC games right now?

It depends on the evening. For a story: Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. For building: Satisfactory, Anno 1800, Manor Lords. For systems: Crusader Kings 3, Hearts of Iron 4, RimWorld. For a fight: ELDEN RING, Hades, Hollow Knight: Silksong.

Which single-player games have the least grind?

Story games with a fixed length: Cyberpunk 2077 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II hand out progression as you play the story. The grind lives in the open-world and survival titles, where a resource arrives at a fixed rate.

Are co-op games worth playing alone?

Some are built for it. PEAK, Supermarket Together and R.E.P.O. all have a solo mode that is the full game with fewer hands. Others, like Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor, are single-player by design despite the family name.

Can I cheat in a single-player game without consequences?

Nobody else is affected, and no anti-cheat runs in a single-player session. What can change is achievements, which some games lock when their own console or cheat mode is used. That is per game, and there is a guide for it here.
