Best Story Games on PC: Worlds Worth a Hundred Hours

A story game on PC is a hundred hours you spend with a person, a city or a war, and the good ones are still good in hour ninety. This is a list of the ones we know well enough to say that about, sorted by what kind of story they tell, with an honest line on where each one puts a system between you and the next chapter.

Takeaways Story games on PC, by what they are about

  1. A party and its arguments Baldur's Gate 3. Eleven companions, a d20 in every conversation, and a save that remembers what you said.
  2. A city that does not want you Cyberpunk 2077. Night City after 2.0, and a character sheet with one attribute reset per playthrough.
  3. A life with a horse in it Red Dead Redemption 2. Cores for health, stamina and Dead Eye, a bounty that closes towns, and 37 cheat codes the game will not let you save with.
  4. A country you have to learn Kingdom Come: Deliverance II. Henry gets hungry, tired and hurt, and the story waits until he has eaten.

The big RPGs

Baldur’s Gate 3 is a party game in the old sense: eleven companions with opinions, every conversation resolved by a d20, and a camp where the people you disappointed say so. Patch 8 in April 2025 was the last major update, and the game is finished in the way few games are. What slows it: the die. One failed roll can close a questline, and the game has no way to force a twenty, which is a reason people reach for a trainer that sets the roll.

Cyberpunk 2077 is the comeback story of the decade, a city that finally works the way it was described. Patch 2.0 rebuilt the character sheet, and the one attribute reset per playthrough is the sore point in an otherwise generous system. What slows it: eddies, until you find a crafting loop.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance II is fifteenth-century Bohemia with a hero who has to eat, sleep and heal, and a story that waits until he has. It ships with a developer console behind a launch option, which is rare for a story game this size. What slows it: groschen, and the lockpicking shake.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt is the monster-contract game every open-world RPG since has been compared to. What slows it: gear that degrades between contracts and a crafting economy that assumes you loot everything.

The open worlds with a life in them

Red Dead Redemption 2 is the slowest game on this list and the most complete. Arthur eats, shaves, tends the horse, and each of those has a bar. The story is a gang falling apart over a year, told at a walking pace. It also has 37 real cheat codes, and using any of them switches off saving for the session, which is Rockstar’s way of keeping the story honest.

Assassin’s Creed Odyssey is Greece as a map the size of a country, with a recommended level per region that makes the story wait while you level. Hogwarts Legacy is the castle, the Highlands and 36 talent points for 48 talents, which is the story’s only real gate.

Starfield and Skyrim are Bethesda’s two ends of the same idea: a world you wander and a story you stumble into. Skyrim’s console is the most famous cheat menu on PC, and it is still there.

Horror that tells something

SILENT HILL f moves the series to 1960s Japan, and its combat is deliberately awkward because you are not a soldier. Cronos: The New Dawn is survival horror with scarce ammunition and a fabricator that wants materials you have to find. Hell is Us refuses to tell you where to go, which is the story. Dying Light 2 is a city after the end, with three clocks running at once.

What slows them: scarcity, on purpose. Horror works because you cannot afford the fight. A trainer here is a choice about whether you want the dread or the plot.

Stories told through repetition

Hades tells its story between runs: every death is a conversation at home, and the family drama moves forward because you failed. Hollow Knight: Silksong tells its through a map, and silk is the resource that gates healing. Both are shorter per session than anything above and longer in total.

The system under every story

Every game on this list keeps its story and its economy apart. The story is scripted; the money, the health, the experience are numbers in memory. That is why a trainer can remove the grind without touching a line of dialogue, and why the one thing to check first is whether the game locks achievements when you do.

The Steam store’s Story Rich tag is the long list. The games we cover are the short one, and the list by kind of evening is the same catalogue from another side.

What are the best story games on PC?

Baldur's Gate 3, Cyberpunk 2077, Red Dead Redemption 2, Kingdom Come: Deliverance II and The Witcher 3 are the ones that hold up over a full run. Hades and Hollow Knight: Silksong tell theirs through repetition, and SILENT HILL f through dread.

Which story game has the least grind?

Baldur's Gate 3 and Kingdom Come: Deliverance II hand out progression through the story itself. Cyberpunk 2077 and Red Dead Redemption 2 have open-world economies that can cost evenings before the money problem solves itself.

Are these games long?

Forty to a hundred and twenty hours for a full run of the big RPGs, longer if you do everything. Hades and Silksong are shorter per run and longer in total. Length is part of why the systems matter: a grind in hour ten is a grind in hour ninety too.

Can I skip the grind without breaking the story?

Usually, yes, because the story and the economy are separate systems. A trainer changes the economy, money, health, experience, and leaves the story alone. Achievements are the one thing to check per game.
